In 2012 The Money Conference for Women will feature these workshops. Workshop offerings are subject to change/cancellation at the discretion of conference organizers and are contingent upon adequate enrollment.


Workshop Descriptions (to be updated in mid-2012)

A. The Basics of Money Management

This workshop focuses on basic money management skills, setting goals, developing a spending plan, reducing expenses and debt reduction. Real examples will engage and empower you to manage your household’s resources and achieve your financial goals.

B. Your Financial Makeover: Real Tips and Tools   
Offered A.M. & P.M.
Women’s financial planning needs are different from those of men. This workshop focuses on women's financial planning needs and provides guidance to help you take control of your financial future by offering resources to help you plan. This highly interactive workshop highlights critical financial issues and concerns for all women. Real-time, personalized suggestions will be offered to address issues you identify as the most important for your financial future.

C. Getting Started in Investing

Investment terminology and getting started in investing can be intimidating. Learn the rules of the game, what to expect and how to pick the right investments for your goals.  This workshop will equip you with the terminology and empower you with the tools necessary to get started.

D. Advanced Investing
Offered P.M.
Take your investing to the next level. This workshop provides a more in-depth look at how to pick the right investments for your goals. Topics include building your portfolio, international investing and asset allocation.

E. Retirement Planning: A Reality Check
Offered AM & PM
Learn the truth about some of the most popular and misunderstood myths on preparing for retirement. This workshop explains important concepts and principles of creating retirement income including how much money you will need, social security, investments for retirement, the rules of withdrawing your retirement savings and working with financial advisers.

F. Preparing for Homeownership
Offered A.M.
Learn the fundamentals of preparing for homeownership. This workshop will cover understanding your credit history and credit score in the loan process, what steps to take in assessing your readiness to apply for a mortgage, how to shop for the right mortgage lender for your situation, how to avoid predatory lenders and how calculate monthly payments.

G. Protecting Your Assets
Offered P.M.
Learn how to protect your auto and property from the unexpected—from a hurricane to your dog biting a neighbor. Auto, homeowners and personal liability insurance will be covered in detail. This workshop will answer questions such as: How much insurance is enough and how can I keep costs down? Do I need renter’s insurance? Does a higher deductible on my auto insurance make sense? How much liability insurance do I really need? What will happen to my rates if I file a claim?

H. Making Debt and Credit Work for You

Understanding debt and the implications of your credit history can be overwhelming. This workshop will provide valuable information about credit history, different types of debt and how to borrow wisely. You will learn about options for starter credit and credit reestablishment. Information will be provided about different types of loans, loan structures, fixed and variable rates, credit cards and revolving credit.

I. Making It On Your Own: Financial Independence for Young Women

Almost ready to be out on your own? Want an apartment, a car or need how much you need for living expenses? How much do you need to be independent? Get savvy about planning for your financial future. Learn about ways you can plan and manage money to live comfortably without guilt or stress. Learn the “real life” cost of living, how to develop a spending plan and effectively manage debt.

J. Energy Matters
Offered A.M.
Learn how you can be “green” and save money at the same time. This workshop will provide simple energy saving tips that you can apply in your home. Each participant will be provided with an Energy Matters booklet and an energy saving light bulb to help you get started in saving energy. Participants will also be provided with CL&P's booklet "Programs That Help People in Connecticut" which includes a listing of resources to help individuals and families in Connecticut.

K. Financial Housekeeping
